The Case for Contradiction includes: inspiring diversity of thought through an open-minded workplace

Outline:

Contradiction:

  1. Is Okay
  2. Inspires Diversity
  3. Increases Profit

1. It is Okay

I have found that the best work environments are open environments. These workplaces consist of people who can question each other’s ideas.

Common workplace questions include:

  • Why did you choose that database to use?
  • Have you considered this?
  • “Phil” knows about tha subject, have you asked him for insight?
  • Have you asked others for their contradictions?

Make sure to inspire a workplace environment that welcomes questioning and sees questions and contradictions as vital to success of the company. This will only make the company culture stronger and ideas better.

There are negative and positive and negative forms of contradictions in the workplace. You can eliminate such negative contradictions by using motivational techniques.

Contradiction is not all negative. Positive aspects of contradiction include the various ideas brought to the table by employees who are comfortable in the workplace.

Contradiction of fellow team members, in an open and respectful way, allows diverse ideas to occur in the workplace.

“Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted.”  (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

2. Inspires Diversity

Let us start by defining diversity as “the condition of having or being composed of differing elements”.

Diversity in a company means that the workplace includes variously experienced people. This means co-workers have had differing life opportunities. By contributing their ideas from those various experiences they can enhance company ideas.

To inspire a diverse environment ask your employees some questions:

  • What experiences have they had that could relate to this topic?
  • Have they considered the impact of their workplace actions?
  • What do they think diversity is?
  • How do they think to encourage diversity through contradictive communication?

Hiring people from different walks of life or ethnicities creates workplace diversity. Find out how employees personal experiences impact their contribution to their work.

Remember, employees do not have to be of different ethnic backgrounds to have diverse life experiences. Encouraging personal experience application to their work is a way of creating diversity as well.

Do not limit your opportunity to get to know your employees and find the ways they can impact the company.

3. Increases Company Profit

The variety of ideas that comes from diverse employees is obvious. Encouraging contradiction in your diverse workplace needs to be just as obvious.

Ask questions like:

  • How would you go about solving this problem?
  • Do you have any input?
  • What makes this idea successful?
  • Is there anything that might prohibit this ideas success?

Such an open, brainstorming, idea-welcoming environment does not happen naturally. It is up to the executive to encourage such an environment.

Proof has been found that diversity increases success in business.

As the executive, it is up to you to take that extra step and prove that contradiction and freedom of thought can increase success on a deeper level.
